Bath quartet selected for London 2012

10 July 2012

Four University of Bath-based athletes were today (Tuesday) named in the ParalympicsGB athletics team to compete at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The quartet includes two reigning world champions – Katrina Hart and Paul Blake – as well as Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games silver medallist Ben Rushgrove.

Bath Quartet - Ben, Paul, Sophie & KatrinaSophie Kamlish completes the quartet – she turns 16 just before the Paralympic Games.

All four are coached at the University by Rob Ellchuk, who is an Economic and Social Research Council funded student studying for a Post Graduate degree in Education.

He said: “Having four athletes selected for the Paralympic Games is fantastic. Step one is completed now – step two is for them to go to London 2012 and come back with medals.”

Katrina Hart, a University of Bath Sports Performance graduate, will run the T37 100m and 200m, and is also a member of the GB 4×100 relay squad.

Katrina is the reigning world champion for the T37 200m having struck gold in New Zealand last year, and she also won gold for England in the T37 100m at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

She made her Paralympic Games debut in Beijing, finishing seventh in the T37 100m final.

Paul Blake makes his Paralympic Games debut at London 2012, running the T36 400m and 800m. He won gold over 400m at last year’s World Championships and silver over 800m.

Ben Rushgrove competes at his second Paralympic Games after winning silver in the T36 100m in Beijing four years ago – a feat that was all the more impressive as he had two broken bones in his foot.

Ben is a University of Bath Sports Performance graduate and in 2009 he was voted the University’s Sports Personality of the Year. He won 100m silver at last year’s World Championships and bronze over 200m and contests both events again at London 2012.

Sophie Kamlish is the youngest of the Bath-based athletes – she turns 16 next month. She makes her Paralympic Games debut in London running the T44 100m and 200m.

Forty nine track and field athletes have been selected to represent Great Britain at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
