Impressive start on day one of London 2012 action

University of Bath students and graduates made an impressive start to the London 2012 Olympic Games in the first full morning of competition today (Saturday).

Heather Stanning and Helen Glover (picutred) made an emphatic start in the very first heat of rowing at Eton Dorney, setting an Olympic record in the women’s pair to progress direct to Wednesday’s final.

Helen Glover and Heather Stanning. Photo: Peter Spurrier/ Intersport ImagesHeather, a University of Bath Sports Technology graduate, and Helen, who also trained in Bath, looked comfortable in winning their heat in six minutes 57.29 seconds, breaking a record set by the Aussies at Atlanta in 1996.

Heather and Helen, who were part of the GB Rowing Team’s Start programme at the University of Bath, progressed directly to Wednesday’s (1 August) final, which is scheduled to take place at 10.10. Join us to cheer them on by watching it on our video wall at the Sports Training Village.

Michael Jamieson, the firs  University of Bath athlete in action in the pool at London 2012, also produced a terrific performance to progress to tonight’s semi-finals of the 100m breaststroke.

The Sports Performance student clocked a time of 59.89 seconds to finish third in his heat and ninth fastest overall to progress to the semis, scheduled to take place at 20.32. Michael trains at the British Swimming Bath Intensive Training Centre.

In fencing, Mathematics & Computing graduate Natalia Sheppard beat GB team-mate Sophie Troinano in the round of 64 in the individual foil competition, which concludes later today.
