University of Bath student Tom Heathcote has been called into the senior Scotland rugby squad for the first time ahead of Saturday’s EMC Test against Tonga.

Heathcote is in the third year of a Politics and Economics degree at the University and has been contracted to Bath Rugby as an Academy player since his first year.

He featured for the University of Bath first XV as fresher. Now 20, he plays for Bath, but is still active around the Unversity squad, offering players the benefit of his advice and experience.

The fly-half was born in Inverness and was recently short-listed for the 2013 LV= Breakthrough Player Award. He said: “I am delighted to be called up to the Scotland squad. I’ve always known I was eligible to play for Scotland and I’m grateful to be given this opportunity.”

Scotland head coach Andy Robinson said: “Tom has worked his way into the Bath first team squad from the Academy and we’ve been monitoring his progress for the last couple of years.”

Meanwhile, University graduate Aaron Jarvis, made his senior Wales debut in their recent defeat to Argentina at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
