Jamieson is British universities sportsman of the year

12 July 2013

University of Bath graduate and swimmer Michael Jamieson has been named British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Sportsman of the Year.

The 24-year-old Sports Performance graduate was named winner of the prize at last night’s (Thursday) BUCS Awards Dinner.

He said: “I’m delighted to have been named BUCS sportsman of the year. I owe a lot of thanks to the University for their support in the past few years, without whom I would not have had the performance results.

“The facilities at the Sports Training Village are world class, as are the support staff,” he added.

It followed an exceptional 2012/3 that saw Jamieson win 200m breaststroke silver at both the London 2012 Olympics and also at the World Short Course Championships.

He also won a hat-trick of titles at the BUCS Short Course Championships and was runner-up in the BBC’s Superstars programme, which was filmed at the University of Bath.

Jamieson trains at British Swimming’s British Gas Intensive Training Centre (ITC) at the University of Bath. In May students voted Jamieson winner of the University of Bath Sports Personality of the Year award.

He received a Santander Bath ITC Scholarship, which helps talented swimmers to pursue academic and sporting excellence at the University of Bath.

Jamieson is one of five Bath ITC swimmers currently preparing to compete at the World Championships in Barcelona. You can catch up with his thoughts about the competition and those of team-mate and training partner Andrew Willis and coach Dave McNulty on our latest Team Bath TV movie at http://www.teambath.com/about/teambathtv/

The World Championships take place in Barcelona from 28 July to 4 August.

Jamieson is joined in the GB team for the World Championships by training partners Chris Walker-Hebborn, Andrew Willis, Siobhan Marie O’Connor and Sophie Allen.
