Jamieson named in Scotland team for Glasgow 2014

16 April 2014

University of Bath-based swimmer and graduate Michael Jamieson was today (Wednesday) named in the Scotland team to compete at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The 25-year-old, who trains at the British Gas National Centre for Swimming at the University, will contest the 100m and 200m breaststroke at the Games.

He won silver for Scotland in the 200m breaststroke at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealths and followed that up with silver for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics.

Jamieson, a University of Bath Sports Performance graduate, was voted the University’s Sports Personality of the Year for 2013 by his fellow students.

He features in a 40-strong aquatics team for Glasgow 2014. It is Team Scotland’s largest aquatics team for a Commonwealth Games. Further names will be added to the team at a later date.

Jamieson is an ambassador for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealths, where swimming will take place at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in the pool at which Jamieson trained at the beginning of his career.

His selection followed impressive performances at the Scottish National Open Championships and the British Championships, which both took place at Tollcross. He won the 200m breaststroke title at both events, coming second in the 100m at the Scottish Nationals and third at the British Championships.

Jamieson, who is coached by Dave McNulty and Graeme Antwhistle, becomes the fourth athlete with University of Bath links to be selected to compete at Glasgow 2014. Hurdler Eilidh Child, who is coached at the University by Malcolm Arnold, British Athletics’ Lead Hurdles Coach, has also been selected to represent Scotland.

Swimmer Jemma Lowe, who trains at the National Centre for Swimming, has been selected to represent Wales at Glasgow 2014, as has rifle shooter Jenny Corish, a University of Bath Natural Sciences graduate.
