Mariana and Alex to play for Jersey at Glasgow 2014

16 May 2014

University of Bath graduates Mariana Agathangelou and Alex Hutchings will play badminton for Jersey at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Agathangelou is a Coach Education and Sports Development graduate who played for England at the Delhi Games in 2010 where she was a member of the England team that won team bronze.

She also partnered fellow University of Bath graduate Heather Olver in the women’s doubles, reaching the quarter-finals.

Agathanelou has now returned to play for Jersey, where she was born, and is a member of their five-strong badminton squad for Glasgow.

She is joined by Hutchings,  a University of Bath Sports Performance graduate who makes his Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow.

Both were coached in Bath by Peter Bush, head badminton coach at the University of Bath. He said: “I’m pleased for them both. They both worked hard at their game and it’s great to see our alumni will be out in force at the Commonwealth Games.”

The Jersey badminton team is coached by Nathan Robertson, mixed doubles silver medallist at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

Agathangelou and Hutchings’ selections means athletes with University of Bath links will now represent seven countries in five sports at Glasgow 2014.

They will compete for England, Ghana, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Scotland and Wales, in athletics, badminton, judo, shooting and swimming.
