Hat-trick of personal bests for weightlifter Sonny Webster at World Championships

01 December 2015

University of Bath student Sonny Webster concluded an excellent year of competition by recording three personal bests at the IWF World Weightlifting Championships in the United States.

The 21-year-old, who studies Sports Performance, competed in the men’s 94k C group in Houston and started in confident fashion by achieving a best-ever snatch lift of 151kg.

He then set a new PB of 188kg with his third and final lift in the clean and jerk to accomplish a new individual record combined total of 339kg, putting him seventh overall in his group.

British Weight Lifting Performance Director Tommy Yule said: “Sonny can be delighted with his performance in Houston and can take great confidence heading into next season from the fantastic progress he continues to make.

“It is great to see he has not just the talent but the mental toughness required to produce his best when it matters most.”

Olympian Zoe Smith, who does some of her training at the Sports Training Village, broke two British senior records as she finished ninth overall in the women’s 63kg A group – Britain’s best World Championships performance since 2002.
