Rio Olympians and Tokyo hopefuls named in GB squad for home European Swimming Champs

26 April 2016

Four Rio-bound swimmers based at the University of Bath and two targeting the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have been selected in the Great Britain squad for next month’s LEN European Championships in London.

Jazz Carlin, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, Chris Walker-Hebborn and Chemical Engineering graduate Andrew Willis are among the 26 Team GB swimmers who will compete at the home Europeans as part of their Olympic Games preparations.

British Swimming National Performance Director Chris Spice said: “This event comes at a perfect time within our preparations for the Rio Games and will provide a fantastic competition opportunity while the athletes continue to train towards the Olympics.

“As a team we couldn’t have asked for anything better. A major international event at an iconic 2012 Olympic venue provides a unique experience for the team as it continues its hard work towards the Games.”

British Swimming will also use the Europeans, taking place from May 16-22, to continue the development of a group of athletes – including Charlie Attwood and Joe Hulme – identified as potential Tokyo 2020 Olympians.

All six of the selected swimmers are coached by Dave McNulty and Graeme Antwhistle at the British Swimming National Centre, based at the Sports Training Village.

Carlin, O’Connor, Walker-Hebborn and Willis are the first University of Bath-based athletes to be formally selected for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, with the announcement taking place at the STV’s London 2012 Legacy Pool last week.
