Change of name and new coach for Aquae Sulis

08 February 2017

Local performance swimming club Aquae Sulis (ASPSC) has a new Head Coach and will, from today, adopt a different name as part of a series of changes brought about by its new management committee.

The club, which draws its swimmers from 11 local swimming clubs and which has seen a number of swimmers achieve notable regional and national successes, will be called Team Bath AS.

Chris Alderton, former international swimmer and current University assistant coach, has emerged from a formal recruitment process as the new Head Coach.

Both moves follow a turbulent 12 month period behind the scenes and mark the continuation of a new strategy for the club which has a changed management committee since September 2016.

As part of a new partnership with the University of Bath, the community club – which will continue to be managed independently by the club committee – will be supported in its development for a twelve month period with some subsidised pool time. The club is based at the world-class 50m 2012 legacy pool within the Sports Training Village.

Stephen Baddeley, Director of Sport at the University, said: “This closer working relationship with ASPSC means that the full swimming pathway continues to be provided at our 50M swimming pool. Ensuring the future provision of the ASPSC (TeamBathAS) programme is important to provide a link between TeamBath learn to swim programme and the University swim team along with the British Swimming National Centre”.

Alderton came through from a dozen good candidates to be named as the club’s Head Coach.. Alderton has a degree in Sport Performance is a former elite swimmer and represented his country at an international level. Chris will move across from his current role as assistant coach at the University of Bath working with some of the world’s finest athletes, as well as working with and learning from many of British Swimming’s elite swimming coaches. {Insert Photo} Chairman of Team BathAS Adrian Sharman says ‘”We are delighted that Chris has accepted the position of Head Coach and we are sure he will be a success. He comes with an impressive pedigree of 20 years of experience in the sport and understands what it takes to compete on the world stage.

“These invaluable experiences can only benefit our swimmers on their swimming journey. Chris joins an impressive coaching team that we have built.

“We are confident that following the two exciting developments this week TeamBathAS now provides a platform for swimmers in Bath and the surrounding areas to build on their successes.
