Title-chasing Exeter pushed all the way by men’s 1st XV in televised BUCS Super Rugby derby battle

The University of Bath men’s 1st XV pushed title-chasing Exeter University all the way in a televised thriller before being edged out 36-28 in the penultimate BUCS Super Rugby game of the season.

Exeter had won comfortably when the teams met at the Sports Training Village but Bath, sponsored by IKON Construction and supported by Investigo, showed how far they have come since then during an action-packed battle at Exeter Chiefs’ Sandy Park.

The hosts were first out the starting gates and opened the scoring via a penalty before being awarded a penalty try in the 15th minute.

Bath replied brilliantly with an Austin Hay try, converted by Will Partington, but Exeter replied in kind to lead 17-7 with 25 minutes gone.

Back came Bath again and a try and conversion from full-back Will Partington reduced the deficit to just three points at half-time.

Exeter were first on the board in the second half, a converted try putting them 24-14 ahead, but Bath stunned the home side by scoring twice in five minutes to take the lead.

Charlie Dunbar touched down in the 54th minute, then Will Flinn (pictured) went over and Partington converted both to give Bath a 28-24 advantage with an hour on the clock.

Bath fought to protect their lead but a converted try edged Exeter ahead once again before a touchdown six minutes from time sealed a hard-fought win.

The team’s next and final game of this BUCS Super Rugby season will be against Hartpury College on Wednesday, February 28 at the Hartpury Sports Academy (7pm).
