Men’s 1st XV caught cold in icy conditions before turning up the heat in second half at Hartpury

28 February 2018

A strong second-half performance gave the University of Bath men’s 1st XV some positives to take from their final BUCS Super Rugby league match of the 2017-18 season, a 29-17 defeat away to local rivals Hartpury College.

The match was played in snowy conditions and IKON Construction-sponsored Bath were caught cold in the first half, going 24-0 down.

They were much improved in the second period, though, and got on the scoresheet when Will Partington touched down in the 44th minute.

Number eight Jack Davies touched down just after the hour mark, with Partington adding the extras, and replacement Beck Cutting – fresh from playing for England U20s in the Six Nations against Scotland – also went over to close the gap to seven points with 12 minutes remaining before a try from Maliq Holden ended Bath’s hopes of a comeback.

Attention now turns to the BUCS Rugby Championship, a knockout competition where the prize for the finalists is a trip to Twickenham. The last-16 matches are scheduled for March 21.
