University of Bath sporting scholar Hannah Jones has been named in the South East Stars women’s cricket squad for the inaugural Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy competition, which gets under way this weekend.

The Sports Performance student, who is supported by a Trendell Sporting Scholarship, is in a 14-strong squad that will represent Surrey and Kent in the regional 50-over tournament that has been created to allow top-class women’s cricket to be played this summer following the curtailment of the domestic season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

All-rounder Jones, who is a spin bowler, captains Surrey CCC in Division 1 of the Women’s County Championship and is one of nine players from the club selected by South East Stars.

They will contest the South Group – also featuring Southern Vipers, Sunrisers and Western Storm – in a double round-robin format, with the group winners facing their counterparts from the North section in the final on September 26.

Jones and her colleagues will start their competition on Saturday (August 29) at Beckenham against Western Storm, which represents Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Cornwall, Devon, Wiltshire and Wales.
