Dream day for University of Bath students Matthew Ward and Lowri Windsor at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
University of Bath sporting scholar Matthew Ward says winning bronze for host nation Scotland at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games is “what dreams are made of”.
Ward, who studies and trains at the University, led off for Scotland in Tuesday’s mixed 4x100m medley relay and put them firmly in medal contention by placing second in the backstroke leg.
Angharad Evans and Keanna Macinnes kept the hosts in the hunt before Scottish legend Duncan Scott produced his trademark surge through the field to secure third place behind Australia and South Africa, much to the delight of the home crowd in the Tollcross International Centre.
“I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep tonight, that was just unbelievable,” said Ward, who studies Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and is supported by a Bill Whiteley Scholarship.
“To get my first ever senior international medal with this group in front of a home crowd at my first Commonwealth Games is what dreams are made of.”
That came less than an hour after Ward and his housemate Jack Skerry and Cam Brooker had finished second, third and fourth in the 100m backstroke semi-final to secure their place in Wednesday’s final (7.07pm).
All four Aquatics GB Bath Performance Centre swimmers will be going for medals on the last day of swimming competition after Jacob Peters made smooth progress to the 50m butterfly final (7.49pm).
It was a day to remember for Team Bath Netball’s Lowri Windsor, who made her senior Team Wales debut in an emphatic 74-30 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Pool B. The University of Bath Sports Performance student was presented with her cap by club colleague Poppy Tydeman.
Wales face New Zealand on Wednesday (7pm), while an England squad featuring Bath graduates Imogen Allison and Jayda Pechova take on Tonga in Pool A (4pm).
At the Scotstoun Stadium, Team Bath AC runner Justin Davies made a solid start to his 800m campaign for Team Wales by placing second in his heat in 1:46.98. His semi-final is scheduled for 8.45pm on Thursday.
