Bath’s Vancouver 2010 golden girl presented with her MBE

25 November 2010

Bath’s Olympic golden girl Amy Williams was presented with her MBE by The Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace today (Thursday).

The University of Bath Sports Performance graduate received the honour in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List following her outstanding performance in winning skeleton gold at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games in March.

Amy said: “I was really proud and pleased today. It’s a lovely medal, it’s really pretty, and it’s going to go alongside my gold medal.”

Amy trained for her Vancouver challenge at the University of Bath where the British Skeleton programme is based.

Her Vancouver 2010 medal was only the ninth gold medal Britain has won at an Olympic Winter Games. The last gold was won by the women’s curling team in Salt Lake City in 2002 and the last individual gold was won by figure skater Robin Cousins at Lake Placid in 1980. The last British woman to win an individual gold was Jeannette Altwegg, who won figure skating gold in Oslo in 1952.

Amy had the honour of carrying the Union Flag at the Closing Ceremony to the Games and thousands of people turned out to welcome her back to her home city when she took an open top bus tour of the Bath on her return.

In June she became only the fifth person since the Second World War to be made an Honorary Freeman of the City of Bath.
