Freddie helps Britain win World University Champs

13 August 2014

University of Bath student Freddie Clarke helped the Great Britain men’s team win the World University Rugby Sevens Championships in Brazil.

The British team retained the title they won in 2012 by beating Belgium 17-7 in the final at São José dos Campos.

Great Britain started the competition with a 40-7 win over Canada before going down 12-5 to France. They beat Namibia 43-7 and Japan 17-14, before beating the host nation 12-10 in the semis.

Clarke, who is a Sports Performance student, was supported at the championships by funding from the University’s Alumni Elite Athlete Fund, which is kindly donated by University Alumni. He features regularly for the University of Bath team.

He played for the University of Bath team that won the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Rugby Sevens Championship for the first time in May and went on to represent England at the Red Bull European Rugby Sevens finals at Richmond in June. England won the title with a 33-12 victory over Wales in the final.
