Liam Sanford earns GB hockey call ahead of crunch play-off weekend for Team Bath Buccs

21 April 2017

Team Bath Buccaneers Hockey Club’s Liam Sanford has followed up his recent senior England debut by being named in the Great Britain men’s squad for next week’s visit to the Sultan Azlan Shah Tournament in Malaysia.

It continues a superb season for the young full-back, who made his England bow in South Africa last month after being added to the national central training programme.

The Sultan Azlan Shah Tournament is an invitational event featuring four of the world’s top eight teams, including current World Champions and Champions Trophy holders Australia plus New Zealand and Japan.

Great Britain – coached by former Team Bath Head Coach Bobby Crutchley – will use the event as preparation for this summer’s World Cup qualifiers in London.

Sanford and his team-mates will head off to Malaysia following the National League Finals, which conclude at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre in London this weekend.

Team Bath Buccs are bidding to gain promotion to the Premier Division through the play-offs after winning the Men’s Conference West title. Following a narrow defeat to Sevenoaks in the opening play-off match earlier this month, they now face must-win games against Canterbury on Saturday (2pm) and Durham University on Sunday (11.30pm).
