Student Jenny Nesbitt selected for Gold Coast 2018 ahead of Commonwealth celebration at University of Bath

12 March 2018

Sporting scholar Jenny Nesbitt has become the 30th University of Bath-based sportsperson to be selected for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games after she was called into the Welsh athletics squad.

The news comes a day before the University celebrates its Gold Coast links with a Commonwealth Lunch that will be attended by a host of the selected sportspeople, students from 22 Commonwealth nations and dignitaries including Guest of Honour Dame Katherine Grainger, the Chair of UK Sport.

Sports Performance student Nesbitt, supported by a Trendell Sports Scholarship, only received the news of her selection in the 10,000m last week but is jetting out to Australia today (Monday) to begin her final preparations.

“I couldn’t believe it when I was told that I’d been selected and I am just so, so happy to be given the opportunity to represent Wales on the Gold Coast,” said Nesbitt, who recovered from knee surgery to compete at the World University Games and European U23 Athletics Championships last year.

“Having been through two operations in the past 18 months, it makes my selection feel even better and I’m really hoping that I can produce my best performance on the Gold Coast and use the Games as a springboard to progress even more.”

Nesbitt is the latest current University student to be selected for next month’s Commonwealth Games, joining fellow track athlete Cameron Chalmers, badminton player Jessica Li and swimmers Guy Davies, Anna Hopkin and Miles Munro.

University-based athletes representing eight Commonwealth countries across six different sports – athletics, badminton, netball, shooting, swimming and triathlon – have so far been selected for the Games, which will run from April 4-15.
