Narrow defeat for Team Bath Tennis’ Anna Smith in French Open first round at Roland Garros

31 May 2018

Team Bath Tennis player Anna Smith and partner Xenia Knoll were edged out in a hard-fought three-set first round in the French Open women’s doubles competition at Roland Garros.

Smith, coached by Ian MacDonald and Dan Smethurst at the University of Bath Sports Training Village, and Swiss partner Knoll won the first set on a tie-breaker against Irina Bara and Mihaela Buzarnescu.

However, just one break of serve in each of the next two tightly-fought sets proved to be enough to send the Romanian duo through 6-7 6-3 6-4.

Fed Cup player Smith – who has played at 11 of the past 12 Grand Slams – now turns her attention to the grass court season, which will include a visit to SW19 for the Wimbledon Championships.

Smith is one of the many touring professionals based out of the Team Bath International High-Performance Academy – click here for more information.
