Team Bath judoka Adam Hall and Rhys Thompson both bag bronze for GB at 2018 European Judo Open
Team Bath judoka Adam Hall and Rhys Thompson both won bronze medals when they competed at the 2018 European Judo Open in Glasgow.
Hall (pictured right), who is in his last year of competition as he transitions into his role as assistant coach to Juergen Klinger at the University of Bath, beat fellow Brits Neil Schofield and Wesley Greenidge in the repechage of the +100kg category to earn his podium place after an opening defeat to Spain’s Irinel Chelaru.
Thompson, supported by the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS), lost to France’s Clement Delvert in Pool C of the -100kg division but overcame Luca Ardizio of Italy and Sweden’s Emil Mattsson in the repechage to secure his medal.
The two bronzes helped Great Britain finish second overall in the medal table.
Klinger said: “They were good results for Adam and Rhys. It is Adam’s last year of competition, so that is a great way to finish his international career.”
Gregg Varey also competed in Glasgow but had to settle for seventh place overall in a big -66kg field. He started well in Pool A, beating Australia’s Noam Tidhar and Elias Korkko of Finland, but was denied a place in the semi-finals by Belgium’s Kenneth van Gansbeke and was then defeated by Andrej Klokov of Lithuania in the repechage.
