Dakar delight as Team Bath Judo’s Gregg Varey wins third Continental Open medal
Team Bath Judo’s Gregg Varey claimed the third Continental Open medal of his career when he won a brilliant bronze at the Dakar African Open in Senegal.
The University of Bath Sports Performance graduate, who is Team Captain of the Team Bath High Performance Judo Squad, beat home favourite Jeannot Diata in the -66kg bronze-medal match to secure a well-deserved podium place.
Varey needed just 42 seconds to win his opening bout against Nigeria’s Moctar Nourou Sourakatou and then came through a tough quarter-final against Adebayo Frederic Olympio of Togo.
Algeria’s Houd Zourdani, who went on to win gold, had the edge in the semi-final but Varey responded well to claim his first international medal for 18 months.
