Another epic epee gold medal for wheelchair fencer Piers Gilliver on the road to Toyko 2020

18 December 2018

University of Bath wheelchair fencer Piers Gilliver continued his perfect start to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games qualification period when he won Category A epee gold at the latest IWASF World Cup in Kyoto, Japan.

The MJ Church Ambassador followed up his success in Georgia last month by dominating the field, winning all of his contests by five points or more to cap a hugely successful 2018.

World and European Champion Dimitri Coutya, who trains alongside Gilliver at the Sports Training Village, was on the podium twice in Japan as he won bronze in both the Category B epee and foil.

Both Gilliver and Coutya, coached by Peter Rome, have been in superb form during the past 12 months and have enhanced their status as world leaders in their categories.
