Super silver is best yet as Team Bath judoka Gregg Varey returns to podium at Dakar African Open

19 November 2019

Team Bath High Performance Judo Squad captain Gregg Varey recorded his best result yet on the international stage as he won a superb silver at the Dakar African Open in Senegal.

It was only the third competition back after injury for Varey, who got off to a strong start in the -66kg category as he beat Mauritania’s Aly Diallo by ippon inside 40 seconds of their first-round contest.

The University of Bath Sports Performance graduate then battled past Ismael Alhassane of Nigeria before defeating home favourite Serigne Gaye to reach the first Continental Open final of his career.

Algeria’s Wail Ezzine proved too strong in the final but the silver was a step up from the bronze that Varey had won at the Dakar Open 12 months ago and a fourth continental medal for his collection.
