04 February 2020

University of Bath alumni Alex Lane won his second English Nationals Badminton Championships men’s singles title in Winchester last weekend.

The 24-year-old top seed, who trained at the Sports Training Village with Pete Bush from 2015, beat Johnnie Torjussen 21-19 21-10 in his fourth final in five years to replicate his 2017 success.

First and second-year Sports Performance students Will Jones and Molly Chapman also qualified and reached the quarter-finals in each of their doubles events.

The Santander Scholarship pair were defeated 13-21 9-21 by Tom Wolfenden and Jenny Moore in the mixed doubles, having prevailed over three sets against Ethan Van Leeuwen and Elizabeth Tolman in the previous round.

Chapman reached the women’s doubles quarters alongside Fee Teng Liew. This time Tolman gained revenge, recovering from a set down with Abigail Holden to win 21-19 17-21 19-21.

Jones and Brandon Yap were eliminated by Rory Easton and Ethan Van Leeuwen 21-16 21-16 in the men’s doubles quarter-finals, having beaten Ben Jarvis and Harry Lines earlier on Saturday in the last 16.
