First ITF singles title for Luke Johnson as Team Bath Tennis players win trophies in three countries while world’s best U12s compete at STV
It has been a trophy-winning weekend both for Team Bath Tennis players on the national and international circuits, and for two of the world’s top juniors in a global tournament staged at the University of Bath.
Luke Johnson, who is coached by Ian MacDonald, won his first-ever ITF World Tour men’s singles title as he fought back from a set down to beat Cannon Kingsley of the United States 3-6 6-4 7-6(6) in the final of the ITF M15 Ithaca tournament in New York.
Johnson had been in fantastic form all week and won his quarter-final against Nico Mostardi without dropping a game before defeating Vasil Kirkov 6-1 6-1 in the last four.
Kirkov was Johnson’s partner in a men’s doubles competition that saw the Team Bath Tennis ace claim his second title of the week thanks to a 7-6(3) 6-3 victory over Alex Knaff and Joshua Peck in the final.
There were three Team Bath Tennis players in the women’s doubles final at the ITF W60 Nantes tournament in France, with Samantha Murray Sharan and partner Jessika Ponchet taking the silverware with a 6-4 6-2 win against Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nicholls.
Back in the UK, there was women’s singles success for Hannah Smith at the LTA British Tour Loughborough event as, after battling past Ruby Cooling 3-6 7-6(4) 10-9 in the semi-finals, she recorded an impressive 6-1 6-0 victory over Nao Nishino to clinch the title.
