Student-athlete Grace Crompton in fine try-scoring form as Great Britain conclude HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Toulouse

15 May 2023

University of Bath student Grace Crompton bagged four tries as Great Britain’s women finished seventh overall at the France 7s tournament in Toulouse, the last event of the 2022-23 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Crompton, who studies Sports Management and Coaching, scored the decisive third try in a 19-12 victory over Japan and touched down again as Great Britain beat Spain 33-12 in their second match of Pool C.

She continued her scoring streak against Fiji in stunning style, running the length of the pitch for a blistering solo effort, but a narrow 19-17 defeat meant GB missed out on top spot and would face France in the quarter-finals.

The hosts proved too strong, winning 28-10, and GB also lost 14-5 to Japan in the fifth-placed semi-final despite another try from Crompton. However, they finished on a winning note as two tries from Integrated Mechanical & Electrical Engineering graduate Amy Wilson Hardy helped secure a 22-17 success against Fiji.

That meant Great Britain finished seventh both on the day and in the overall World Series standings, narrowly missing out on a Paris 2024 Olympic Games qualification place. However, they have another chance to secure their spot at the European Games in Poland from 25-27 June.
