Another World Championships medal for British Skeleton’s Matt Weston as University of Bath-based squad excel in Winterberg

Matt Weston added a World Championships silver medal to the gold he won last year and there were two fourth-placed finishes as University of Bath-based British Skeleton athletes once again impressed in Winterberg.

Germany’s Christopher Grotheer set a new track record on his way to winning the men’s title on home ice but defending champion Weston pushed him all the way, finishing just 0.23secs behind after four consistent runs, as he became the first Brit to medal at successive World Championships.

Newly-crowned European Champion Marcus Wyatt was one-hundredth of a second off the podium in fourth, having recorded the fastest time in the fourth and final run, and Craig Thompson completed a hat-trick of Brits inside the top 10 as he placed eighth overall.

Tabby Stoecker and Amelia Coltman went mighty close to winning medals in the women’s race too, finishing on the extended podium in fourth and sixth respectively.

Stoecker sat in the silver-medal position after the first two runs on Thursday but eventually missed out on a medal by just two-hundredths of a second in a race won by Canada’s Hallie Clarke.

Coltman, on her senior World Championships debut, produced two excellent performances in Friday’s decisive runs – setting the third and fourth-fastest times respectively – to finish just seven-hundredths of a second behind her team-mate in sixth.

Athletes with the British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association are based at the University of Bath, home to the UK’s only outdoor push-start track. They also do their strength and conditioning work at the Team Bath Sports Training Village. Click here to find out more.
