Five gold among 28-medal haul as University of Bath swimmers enjoy roaring success at Golden Bear Meet in Croatia
The University of Bath Swimming Club won five gold medals, 14 silver and nine bronze as they enjoyed another successful visit to the annual Golden Bear Meet in Zagreb, Croatia.
In total the 19-strong squad achieved 52 final placings and Mark Skimming, Head of Swimming at the University, said: “There was a good percentage of personal bests and some very good performances in not ideal conditions compared to what the swimmers are normally used to.
“They did a great job of adapting to the situation and put out some very good performances.”
There were 400m individual medley wins for both Tom Deffains (4:41.67) and Anna Farrow (5:00.85), while gold medals were also secured by Louise Ashford (800m freestyle, 9:21.53), Kate Baxter (100m butterfly, 1:05.08) and Leila Flower (200m butterfly, 2:22.39).
Ashford and Baxter also won silver in the 400m freestyle (4:31.59) and 200m butterfly (2:27.53) respectively, while Flower added bronze in both the 100m butterfly (1.06.07) and 400m freestyle (4.36.77).
Ridhwan Mohammed claimed a hat-trick of silver medals in the 100m butterfly (56.55), 200m freestyle (1:53.87) and 400m freestyle (4:04.39), and there were two apiece for Ceara Barber (50m backstroke 31.17, 100 backstroke 1:05.53), Archie Evans (50m backstroke 26.77, 100m backstroke 59.12) and William Godsell (100m breaststroke 1:03.99, 200m IM 2:08.39). The latter also won 200m breaststroke bronze (2:20.39).
Cypriot international Markos Iakovidis won 50m breaststroke silver (28.78) and Christian Ryan claimed 200m breaststroke silver (2:17.07), as well as 50m (29.20) and 100m breaststroke (1:04.12) bronze.
Maisie Gilford also earned three podium places – 100m freestyle silver (57.27), 50m freestyle bronze (26.67) and 50m butterfly bronze (29.03) – and there were further third-placed finishes for Kaleb Fox-Jones (50m butterfly, 25.09) and William Dean (200m freestyle, 1.56.81).
