Second successive gold moves British Skeleton’s Matt Weston closer to historic defence of IBSF Overall World Cup crown

University of Bath-based Matt Weston moved closer to a historic defence of his IBSF Overall World Cup crown after winning a second successive men’s skeleton gold, this time at the sport’s spiritual St Moritz home.

The in-form Brit, who finished half-a-second clear of reigning Olympic Champion Christopher Grotheer in Switzerland, just needs a top-15 finish in the last World Cup race of the season to top the overall rankings again.

Weston was back on the podium later in the day after winning mixed team bronze with Amelia Coltman.

The results continue Weston’s remarkable record of medalling at every race he has entered this season and takes his total tally of career top-tier golds into double figures.

Team-mate Marcus Wyatt remains second in the overall men’s rankings following an eighth-placed finish in St Moritz, while Jacob Salisbury was 22nd on his first World Cup appearance of the season.

In the women’s race, Tabby Stoecker just missed a medal as she finished fourth in a 39-strong field. Coltman and Freya Tarbit also recorded their best results yet at St Moritz as they placed 11th and 17th respectively.

Tarbit and Wyatt were fifth in the mixed team race for British Skeleton, who conclude their World Cup season in Lillehammer on Friday 7th February.

The University of Bath is home to the UK’s only outdoor push-start training track and British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association athletes also do their strength and conditioning work at the Team Bath Sports Training Village. Click here to find out more.
