Solid senior 470 World Championships debut provides “invaluable learning experience” for sailing scholar Oscar Cawthorne
University of Bath sporting scholar Oscar Cawthorne says he has learnt a great deal from his first experience of sailing at the senior 470 World Championships.
The Mathematics student, who is supported by a Bill Whiteley Scholarship, teamed up with Alice Davis to finish 33rd overall in Gdynia, Poland.
“It was a solid result for our first senior event and, more importantly, an invaluable learning experience,” said Cawthorne. “We’ve come away with plenty of insights and areas to improve on as we build towards our long-term goal, a shot at the Olympics in the years to come.
“The event delivered five days of intense, high-wind racing that pushed our stamina and resilience to the limit. A strong start in the first two days of qualifying had us on track for a spot in the gold fleet but a UFD (over the line disqualification) on day three unfortunately dropped us into the top of the silver fleet heading into finals.”
