Rapid run sees University of Bath triathlete Mack Downey secure first senior international success in Morocco
University of Bath student-triathlete Mack Downey secured his maiden international senior victory as he surged through the field to take gold at the 2026 Africa Triathlon Premium Cup Larache in Morocco.
The MRes Sociology student, coached by Jack Hall at the Bath Triathlon Performance Centre, was in a group eight seconds behind the leaders after solid performances in the open-water swimming (10:24) and on the bike (28:56).
Downey then produced comfortably the quickest run, his time of 14:43 being 11 seconds faster than nearest challenger Alejandro Pla Estebanez of Spain, as he moved through the pack before pulling away in the closing stages to finish six seconds clear in a total time of 55:25.
It was an excellent performance by Downey in his first overseas race since winning the U23 Duathlon World Championships in Spain 13 months ago.
