Second silver medal for Cam Brooker as Matthew Ward smashes Scottish swimming record at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
University of Bath-based Cam Brooker collected a second swimming silver of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after again playing his part in Team England relay success.
The Aquatics GB Bath Performance Centre swimmer led off for England in the men’s 4x200m freestyle heats and got the quartet off to a strong start, his split of 1:49.75 establishing a hold on second place which his team-mates maintained.
The quartet again changed for the evening’s final, with former Bill Whiteley Sporting Scholar Tom Dean and fellow Olympic Champion James Guy helping England to second spot behind Australia in 7:04.98.
Current Bill Whiteley Scholar Matthew Ward swam in both the heats and final for Scotland, the host nation again finishing just a place outside the medals as they had in Friday’s 4x100m freestyle relay. Advanced Machine Learning student Isaac Dodds was part of the Jersey team that finished seventh (7:36.90).
Ward had set a new Scottish record of 24.75 while placing seventh in Saturday’s 50m backstroke final, which also saw his training partners Jack Skerry (24.68) and Brooker (25.01) finish fourth and eighth respectively for England.

Computer Science student Skerry also qualified for the 200m backstroke final on Sunday, placing seventh in 2:00.62. He, Brooker and Ward will be back in the Tollcross International Centre pool on Tuesday morning for the 100m backstroke heats.
Jacob Peters also begins his 50m butterfly campaign on Tuesday having finished eighth (52.72) in a high-quality 100m butterfly final on Sunday.
The weekend’s netball action saw Trendell Sporting Scholar Jayda Pechova, who graduated in Sports Performance this summer, make her Commonwealth Games debut in England’s 83-34 victory over Northern Ireland.
She also played 30 minutes of Sunday’s tough contest against Australia, the reigning champions showing their class in a 66-47 victory. England, coached by University of Bath Hall of Fame for Sport inductee Anna Stembridge, will look to bounce back on Monday against Malawi (2pm).
It was a frustrating start to the Games for Team Bath Netball’s Poppy Tydeman, who was part of the Wales team that narrowly lost their opening Pool B matches against Uganda and host nation Scotland. They will look to register a first win against Trinidad & Tobago on Tuesday (4pm).
