Debut Davis Cup selection provides another milestone for Team Bath Tennis ace Toby Samuel after first Grand Slam main draw win
After securing a first Grand Slam main draw win and breaking into the world’s top 100, Team Bath Tennis ace Toby Samuel is celebrating another milestone after earning a debut Davis Cup call-up.
Samuel, coached by Ian MacDonald and Tiarnan Brady, joins Arthur Fery, Cam Norrie and doubles specialists Henry Patten and Lloyd Glasspool in the five-strong Lexus Great Britain squad to face Ecuador at London’s Copper Box Arena from 19-20 September.
Selection continues a tremendous 12 months for Samuel, who has surged up the men’s singles world rankings after winning five ATP Challenger Tour titles, reaching the Lexus Eastbourne Open semi-finals and competing at three Grand Slams – the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
The latter tournament saw Samuel show fantastic fortitude to come from a set down in three successive qualifying matches and secure his place in the main draw, where he defeated former world number 20 Tomas Machac 6-2 6-3 6-2 in the first round.
His run was ended by a battling 6-4 6-2 6-4 defeat to number 18 seed Jiri Lehecka but Samuel’s performances at Flushing Meadows have lifted him up to 94th in the live ATP world rankings.
Samuel is part of the Pro Tennis programme at Team Bath, which provides support to players both while training at the University of Bath – a UK Sport-accredited Elite Training Centre – and while competing domestically and internationally. Find out more in this video:
