Prince of Wales Challenge Cup awaits two Crew Bath boats at Henley Royal Regatta

30 June 2015

University of Bath Rowing Club has qualified two crews for The Prince of Wales Challenge Cup at this week’s Henley Royal Regatta.

Both men’s quadruple sculls boats will race at the iconic competition on Thursday, with the A crew being drawn against Hamburger und Germania from Germany.

The University of Bath’s B crew will then face Leander Club in a gladiatorial-style head-to-head race on the famous 2,112m course to see who will progress to the next round.

There are 16 crews in the Challenge Cup and 526 crews from 18 countries taking part in total. All the races over the course of the five-day Regatta wlll be live-streamed on YouTube at www.hrr.co.uk.

The Bath crews will be looking to build on the success enjoyed by Sports & Exercise Student Sam Courty at the Henley Women’s Regatta.

The GB Rowing Team under-23 international was part of a composite Bath University, Cambridge University and Newcastle University crew that comfortably won the Avril Vellacott Cup for elite coxless fours.

After beating Dutch opposition from Skadi and Laga by five lengths in the semi-finals, Courty – coached by Dan Harris on the GB Rowing Team Start programme at the University of Bath – and her colleagues quickly established control in the final against Brown University, USA.

And when Brown hit the wooden boom, causing them to stop, the win was a sure thing for Courty’s crew.
