Perfect week for Anna Smith and team-mates as GB make progress in Fed Cup

10 February 2018

Team Bath Tennis player Anna Smith helped Great Britain enjoy a perfect week of Fed Cup competition and secure their place in the World Group II play-off.

Smith and team-mates Johanna Konta, Katie Boulter and Heather Watson, pictured with captain Anne Keothavong, won all of their rubbers as they swept through their Euro/Africa Zone Group I ties in Estonia to maintain their chances of returning to the elite level of the women’s team competition.

Doubles specialist Smith partnered Fed Cup debutant Boulter to a 6-0 6-2 victory over Francisca Jorge and Maria Joao Koehler as Britain began their week with a 3-0 defeat of Portugal.

They only dropped two games again when Britain faced Estonia on the second day, with Smith and Boulter beating Elena Alygina and Saara Orav 6-1 6-1 to wrap up another whitewash.

That meant that victory over Hungary would secure Britain’s place in April’s World Group II play-off and they sealed progression thanks to singles wins for Konta and Watson, meaning the doubles rubber did not need to go ahead.

Smith, currently ranked in the world’s top 50 doubles players, is part of the Team Bath Tennis International High-Performance Academy and is coached by Ian MacDonald and Dave Sammel at the University of Bath Sports Training Village.
