Students Ben Jones and Louis Newman double up to win bronze medal at national BUCS tennis tournament
University of Bath students Ben Jones and Louis Newman teamed up to bring home bronze from the BUCS [British Universities & Colleges Sport] Tennis Doubles Championships in Nottingham.
Chemistry student Jones, who is supported by a Buchan Jones Sports Scholarship, and Team Bath Dual Career athlete Newman, a first-year Economics student, missed out on a place in the final by the narrowest of margins after going down 4-6 6-2 11-9 to Nottingham’s Jamie Praditngam and Yannick Zuern.
They had reached the semi-final stage by beating Kai Maxted and Prompt Udomdech 6-1 7-6(3), then defeating sixth seeds George Houghton and Alexander McNaughton 6-4 6-4.
The result builds on the silver medal that Jones helped Great Britain win at the Master’U BNP Paribas international student team tournament in December.
Barry Scollo, Director of Tennis at Team Bath, said: “Both boys have been great additions to the University Performance Programme and continue to go from strength to strength.”
The University Performance Programme runs in tandem with the International High-Performance Academy at Team Bath Tennis and provides student-athletes with access to the same world-class coaching as touring professionals. Click here to find out more.
