Superb silver at World Triathlon Para Series in Yokohama boosts Michael Taylor’s Tokyo Paralympics ambitions

University of Bath-based Michael Taylor bolstered his bid for a place at this summer’s Tokyo Paralympic Games by winning a super silver medal at the 2021 World Triathlon Para Series event in Yokohama, Japan on Saturday.

Taylor, who is coached by Rhys Davey at the British Triathlon Bath National Performance Centre, was competing on the World Para Triathlon Series stage for just the second time having made his debut 15 months ago but looked in confident form after a productive winter of work at the Team Bath Sports Training Village.

He secured the fastest swim in the PTS4 race and followed that up with the third-quickest bike leg before producing a strong run to secure second spot overall behind 2019 world champion Alexis Hanquinquant of France.

“I’m buzzing to come away with second place,” said Taylor. “Alexis pulled away from me in the run but next time…”

Next up for Taylor as he seeks Tokyo qualification is the AJ Bell World Triathlon Para Series taking place in Leeds on June 5-6.
