Olympic Champion Tom Dean and double Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Ben Proud are among the first 10 swimmers to be officially selected by Team England for Birmingham 2022.

The University of Bath duo are joined in the initial squad for this summer’s Commonwealth Games by alumna Anna Hopkin, who made her international breakthrough by winning relay bronze at the event four years ago on Australia’s Gold Coast.

He may have won two Olympic titles for Team GB at Tokyo 2020 but this will be a first appearance with Team England for Dean, who trains with the British Swimming National Centre Bath at the University and is supported by a Bill Whiteley Sports Scholarship.

The England team of Siobhan Marie O’Connor, Freya Anderson, Anna Hopkin and Eleanor Faulkner celebrate winning Bronze in the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games

Proud, who is part of Mark Skimming’s training group at the University, was crowned as 50m freestyle World Short-Course Champion in December and will be looking to complete a hat-trick of Commonwealth titles in that discipline after winning gold at both Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018.

Hopkin, who studied Sport & Exercise Science at the University of Bath, is one of three Tokyo 2020 gold-medallists in the Team England squad along with Dean and training partner Adam Peaty.

Team England’s Chef de Mission, Mark England OBE, said: “This is an exceptionally high calibre swimming team to represent Team England at Birmingham this summer. It’s brilliant to announce such an experienced group of swimmers, with eight having competed at a Commonwealth Games before, and I look forward to the swimming team building in the coming months.”
