Winning Great Britain Hockey senior debut for former University of Bath sporting scholar Tim Nurse in New Zealand

25 April 2023

University of Bath alumnus Tim Nurse made his senior Great Britain men’s hockey debut during an emphatic FIH Pro League 2022-23 win over New Zealand in Christchurch.

Nurse, who was supported by a King Sporting Scholarship as he combined hockey and studying Sports Performance, made a big impact from the bench as Great Britain won 5-2 with a dominant performance.

He was also among the replacements the following day as GB came from behind to beat Australia 2-1, completing an excellent first weekend of the New Zealand tournament. The teams meet again in the second leg of fixtures on Friday and Saturday.

It is the latest step on an international journey for Nurse, who helped GB win the Sultan of Johor Cup twice during an impressive U21 career. He has seven senior England caps having made his debut in February 2022.

Ian Cordwell, Head Coach Hockey at the University of Bath, said: “This is a proud moment for Tim, who is one of the most dedicated athletes I have ever coached. His goal was to play for GB at senior level and this achievement is fully deserved for all the years of hard work he has put into his hockey.”

Also representing GB on the New Zealand tour are former Team Bath Buccaneers players Liam Sanford, Stuart Rushmere and, in the women’s team, Sophie Hamilton.

Nurse represented both Team Bath Buccs and the student hockey club while studying at the University of Bath. Click here to find out more about the University’s hockey programme.
