Matt Weston becomes British Skeleton’s most decorated World Champs athlete by winning Team silver with Tabby Stoecker
University of Bath-based Matt Weston became Britain’s most decorated IBSF Skeleton World Championships of all time when he and Tabby Stoecker won Team silver in Winterberg, Germany.
It was Weston’s second silver medal in as many days, after finishing runner-up in the men’s race 24 hours earlier, and the fourth of his career following his men’s gold and team silver at the 2023 championships.
Stoecker, who was fourth in the women’s race, and Weston set a combined time of 1 minute 59.21 seconds while fellow Brits Amelia Coltman and Marcus Wyatt clocked 1.59.46 for fourth place. It was a second near miss for Wyatt who had finished one-hundredth of a second off the podium in the men’s race.
“It’s another great result for the team – we’ve had an incredible week across the board,” said Weston. “The Germans are dominant on their home ice so to come so close to beating both Olympic Champions in a team event here is pretty good going. Tabby was unbelievable. I’m so proud of how she’s performed this week.”
Stoecker added: “It’s an amazing feeling, especially after coming so close yesterday. To be on the podium at the World Championships in my first full season at this level is incredible.”
The opening weekend of the IBSF Bobsleigh World Championships saw Brad Hall and Taylor Lawrence match Britain’s best two-man result for 58 years when they finished fourth, making them the best-ranked non-German team.
The GB2 crew of John Stanbridge and Jens Hullah finished 23rd on their World Championship debut. Stanbridge battled back from a broken neck just 15 months ago, while Hullah – a former international rower who trained on the Start Programme at the University of Bath – only joined the British set-up this season.
Adelé Nicoll finished ninth in the monobob on her World Championship debut on Sunday, clocking a combined time of 3:56.14.
The World Championships conclude on the weekend of March 2-3 with the four-man competition where Hall and Lawrence will be joined by Greg Cackett and Leon Greenwood.
