Thrilling silver completes set of global medals for swimmer Ben Proud as hockey player Tim Nurse is added to GB men’s squad

Ben Proud added an Olympic medal to his collection of 50m freestyle silverware after narrowly finishing second in a thrilling contest at the Paris La Defense Arena tonight.

Tom Dean also raced in his third final of the week, placing fifth in the 200m individual medley behind home favourite Leon Marchand.

Proud, who is a member of the University of Bath Swimming Club, has won World, Commonwealth and European gold but fell just short of a medal on his previous Olympic appearances in 2016 and 2021.

He finally achieved his ambition as he took second place in the ‘splash and dash’ in a rapid time of 21.30, finishing just five-hundredths of a second behind Australia’s Cameron McEvoy.

The following final saw three-time Olympic Champion Dean, who is coached by David McNulty with the Aquatics GB Bath Performance Centre, touch the wall in a new personal best time of 1.54.46.

Thursday’s action had seen Freya Anderson help Great Britain finish a fine fifth in their first women’s 4x200m freestyle relay since London 2012.

Meanwhile, University of Bath graduate Tim Nurse has been added to the GB men’s hockey squad under the late athlete replacement policy following an injury to Nick Park. Nurse, who was in Paris as a travelling reserve, was on the bench for Friday evening’s Pool A match against Germany.
