Breakthrough bronze at World Champs earns Bath sporting scholar Ranjuo Tomblin his 14th artistic swimming medal of brilliant year

25 July 2025

University of Bath sporting scholar Ranjuo Tomblin has capped a stellar season by winning the first World Aquatics Championships medal of his artistic swimming career.

The Sports Performance student and partner Izzy Thorpe received a total score of 322.0583 to place third in the Mixed Duet Free final and secure Great Britain’s first-ever World Championships medal in the event.

The duo had narrowly missed on a medal in the Mixed Duet Tech on Wednesday and it was a fourth top-five finish in Singapore for Tomblin, who placed fifth in the Men’s Solo Tech with 228.4316 before moving up to fourth in the Men’s Solo Free with 210.9125.

It continued an excellent year for the Trendell Sporting Scholar, who had won medals of each colour at the European Championships in June – Men’s Solo Tech gold, Mixed Duet Tech silver with Thorpe, Mixed Duet Free bronze with Holly Hughes and Men’s Solo Free bronze.

That success continued into the Super Final in China, the conclusion of the 2025 World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup campaign, where Tomblin and Thorpe won bronze in both the Mixed Duet Free and Tech. Men’s Solo Free silver and Tech bronze took Tomblin’s personal tally to nine medals in total throughout the series.

Thorpe is no stranger to forging successful partnerships with Bath students having won breakthrough Olympic and World medals with Bill Whiteley Scholar Kate Shortman during a hugely-successful Women’s Duet career.

With Shortman taking a break from the sport as she concentrates on her International Management and Modern Languages (French) placement year, Sports Performance student Robyn Swatman and partner Eve Young represented Aquatics GB in the Women’s Duet in Singapore.

They gained invaluable international experience, qualifying for their first World Championships final in Duet Free where they placed 12th overall with 210.9404. They had finished 25th in the Duet Tech earlier in the week with a score of 233.1983.

Swatman is supported in her dual sporting and academic careers by the Team Bath Breakthrough Programme.

Applications are now being taken by University of Bath student-athletes for both the 2025-26 Sporting Scholarships and Breakthrough Programme. Visit teambath.com/athlete-zone for further details.
