Debut Davis Cup victory provides another first for Team Bath Tennis ace Toby Samuel during year of major breakthroughs
Toby Samuel enjoyed a dream Davis Cup debut as the Team Bath Tennis ace helped the Lexus Great Britain team secure their place in the Final 8 for the first time since 2023.
Samuel was handed the responsibility of opening for Great Britain in their first Davis Cup tie in London for 10 years and, after overcoming some early nerves, he recorded an excellent 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Andres Andrade.
That provided the springboard for Great Britain to ease to a convincing 4-0 win over Ecuador – who had knocked out Australia in the previous round – at the Copper Box Arena.
They will now join Austria, Canada, Czechia, Germany, Italy, South Korea and Spain in the Final 8, a five-day tournament taking place in Bologna, Italy from 24-29 November.
“This was a big dream of mine and you could tell because I got a bit nervous at the start,” said Samuel, who is coached by Ian MacDonald and Tiarnan Brady at Team Bath. “I got myself going and I am so happy I got the job done for Great Britain. Everyone on the side gave me so much energy and support throughout the whole match.”
A winning Davis Cup debut continues an outstanding year for Samuel, who has contested three Grand Slams – Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open – and broken into the top 100 in the ATP men’s singles world rankings.
