Marcus Daniell through to semi-finals in New Zealand after strong start to tennis season

12 January 2017

Team Bath Tennis player Marcus Daniell is through to the semi-finals of his first international tournament of 2017.

Daniell and Marcelo Demoliner of Brazil, competing in the ASB Classic in New Zealand, were 6-3 7-6(4) winners over multiple Grand Slam champion Leander Paes and partner Andre Sa on Thursday.

That followed on from their 6-4 6-4 victory over Guillermo Duran and Joao Sousa in the opening round and set up a last-four showdown with Marcin Matkowski and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi on Friday.

Daniell, ranked 50 in the men’s doubles world rankings, is back in his native New Zealand as he prepares for the Australian Open later this month.

The Rio 2016 Olympian is coached by Dave Sammel and Ian MacDonald at the University of Bath Sports Training Village.

Daniell has described the Team Bath MCTA Academy as “the best in Britain” – click here to find out why.
