Premier League referee joins Bath and Cardiff Met students for Varsity 2016

12 April 2016

There will be a feast of student sport to enjoy at the Sports Training Village on Wednesday as the University of Bath stages its first-ever Varsity match against Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Four sports will be showcased on the day – football, hockey, netball and rugby – and there will be a host of fun supporter activities including an inflatable challenge.

The University of Bath’s cheerleading squad and BodySoc dance society will also be providing entertainment and encouraging spectators to get behind the home team.

The action gets under way at midday with women’s football on the athletics infield and women’s rugby on STV Pitch 1.

Hockey takes centre stage at 2pm, with the women meeting on Astro Pitch 1 and the men’s match taking place on the SITEC Pitch.

Bath and Cardiff’s men clash in the rugby at 3.30pm on STV Pitch 1, followed by the football at 5.30pm on the athletics infield. That match will be refereed by Premier League official Lee Probert, who took charge of the 2014 FA Cup Final between Arsenal and Hull City.

The Varsity concludes with the women’s netball match on STV Court 1 at 7.30pm.

Holly Clemens, SU Sport Officer, said: “The day will be a fantastic way to celebrate sport, bringing together some of the best sporting talent from both Universities.

“It will be a highly competitive day with teams looking to secure a win to help their University to the title of Varsity Champions 2016.”
