Team Bath Tennis duo all set to start Wimbledon 2017 doubles campaigns

05 July 2017

Team Bath MCTA Tennis professionals Anna Smith and Marcus Daniell are all set to begin their Wimbledon 2017 doubles campaigns.

Smith (pictured) and partner Nicole Melichar, from the United States, will start their women’s doubles challenge against Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova – a former French Open and US Open singles champion – and Kristina Mladenovic of France on Court 9 on Wednesday.

Smith and Melichar go into the tournament on the back of reaching the semi-finals at Eastbourne last week.

Rio 2016 Olympian Daniell and Brazilian partner Marcelo Demoliner were due to face Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic and Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov – a former Junior Wimbledon singles champion – in the first round of the men’s doubles.

However, Tipsarevic has been forced to withdraw from the tournament through injury, meaning they will now take on ‘lucky losers’ Ariel Behar of Uruguay and Belarus’s Alexander Bury in a match scheduled for Thursday.

It is the tenth successive Grand Slam that Daniell – coached by Dave Sammel and Ian MacDonald – and Demoliner have contested, with their best Wimbledon performance coming in 2015 when they reached the last 16.

Former Team Bath player Scott Clayton, who is coached by Jim Edgar and still returns to the University for some of his training, and partner Jonny O’Mara will France’s Adrian Mannarino and Paolo Lorenzi of Italy in the first round on Wednesday on Court 4.
