25 January 2018

Five University of Bath students and four graduates are among an 11-strong Pentathlon GB squad starting their international modern pentathlon seasons at the Budapest Indoor Competition in Hungary this week.

Natural Sciences student Jess Varley, supported by the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS), will compete in the women’s qualifiers on Thursday alongside Psychology student Charlie Follett and Santander Sporting Scholar Georgia Hannam, who studies Physical Activity & Health.

Completing the GB women’s squad are graduates Jo Muir and Samantha Murray, the 2014 World Champion and London 2012 Olympic silver-medallist, and junior athlete Kerenza Bryson.

The men’s competition, which starts on Friday, will feature Sports Performance students Jamie Harper and Bradley Sutton (pictured), the latter supported by a Santander Sports Scholarship. Rio 2016 Olympian Jamie Cooke is also in action, as are Bath graduates Sam Curry and Tom Toolis.

The finals will take place on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

The University of Bath has been home to Pentathlon GB’s national training centre for the past 20 years, with many athletes taking the opportunity to combine elite-level sport with a world-class education. Click here to find out more.
