University of Bath-based swimmers and judoka named in Team Wales squad for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games

They were Olympic gold-medal swimming team-mates in the 4x200m freestyle relay in Tokyo a year ago, now they’re wrapped in the flag of the Welsh dragon and heading together to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Matt Richards and Calum Jarvis (pictured right and left of James Guy during the Tokyo Olympics) were named today in a 20-strong Welsh swimming team for the Games. They will be joined in the Midlands in July by Kieran Bird, also a Tokyo Olympian, and based with them at the British Swimming Performance Centre training base at the University of Bath.

Sports Performance graduate, Jarvis, won bronze in the individual 200m free at Glasgow 2014 and was a finalist in this event in 2018 on the Gold Coast. Richards and Bird will be making their Commonwealth debut at the home Games.

Team Bath judoka Gregg Varey, who also studied Sports Performance at the University of Bath, has been confirmed in the Team Wales judo squad for Birmingham. It will be a first Commonwealth Games for Varey, whose wife Amanda – a former Team Bath Netball player and coach – represented Wales in netball at Gold Coast 2018.

Completing a busy day of announcements by Wales, Sport & Exercise Science graduate Jenny Nesbitt was confirmed in the athletics squad for her second Commonwealth Games. She finished 17th in the women’s 10,000m final four years ago.
