Matt Weston is World Champion again as he and Marcus Wyatt record another glorious global 1-2 for Bath-based British Skeleton

British Skeleton’s Matt Weston has been crowned as World Champion for the second time after the University of Bath-based slider capped an outstanding pre-Olympic season with a dominant performance in Lake Placid.
Silver-medallist Marcus Wyatt made it a British 1-2 as he once again joined Weston on the podium, the team-mates replicating the magnificent form that had also seen them place first and second in the Overall IBSF World Cup men’s standings.
Weston, who has won a medal in all but one of his races during 2024-25, laid down a marker in Thursday’s opening heats as he produced the two fastest times to establish a clear 0.89sec lead over nearest challenger Wyatt.
The 2023 World Champion, who also won silver last year, ensured he would add another title to his growing collection by scorching to a new track record of 52.80 in Heat 3 before finishing nearly two seconds clear of the field.
Wyatt dropped a place after the third heat but regained second spot on a fantastic final run to finish three-hundredths of a second ahead of Germany’s Axel Jungk. It was a first individual World Championships medal for Wyatt and takes the total won by British Skeleton athletes at the flagship event over the years to 15.
The British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association, which is based at the University, will be hoping for more medal success over the weekend in the mixed team skeleton and the two-man bobsleigh.
The University of Bath is home to the UK’s only outdoor push-start training track and British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association athletes also do their strength and conditioning work at the Team Bath Sports Training Village. Click here to find out more.
