Winners double up as familiar faces lead way at Pentathlon GB National Ranking Competition

12 February 2017

There was a sense of déjà vu at the University of Bath over the weekend as Kate French, Sam Curry, Olivia Green and Oliver Murray all won their second Pentathlon GB National Ranking Competitions of the year.

The senior event on Sunday saw Rio 2016 Olympian and Sports Performance graduate French (pictured) finish 45 points clear of Natural Sciences student Jess Varley, who is supported by the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS). Jo Muir, another Sports Performance graduate, was a further point back in third.

Politics and International Relations graduate Curry took the men’s title after earning maximum points with a clear round in the decisive ride discipline. Olympian Jamie Cooke was 18 points back in second, just two ahead of Sport & Exercise Science student Tom Toolis.

The U19 Youth events on Saturday saw both Green and Murray – younger brother of London 2012 silver-medallist and 2014 World Champion Samantha – follow up their victories in January’s National Ranking Competition with two more wins.

The swimming, fencing and run/shoot sections of the weekend’s competition all took place at the Sports Training Village, the National Training Centre for Pentathlon GB.
