They will now travel to Serbia, Novi Sad in August to compete at the World University Futsal Championships.

Ian Parkes in action

Mark and Ian who have been trialling with the Great Britain squad over the summer were selected this week to compete at this Internationally recognised event.

This is a great achievement for them as they only started playing Futsal three years ago when the Team Bath Futsal Club first established itself  entering into the FA National Futsal League.

This is a huge club development and it is hoped will encourage a wave of new students come October wanting to play Futsal.

The success of Mark and Ian has followed on the back of past individual honours with club Goal Keeper Lee Jones, former students Brendan Dix, Sion Kitson and Marc Canham all being involved with either the Full England team or the Great Britain Futsal Team highlighting the growth of Futsal at the University of Bath.

The Club and the whole of the University wish them a successful competition and hope their international experience will spur on Team Bath Futsal Club to become number one in the country next season.

Weale wins historic European Champs silver medal

Weale wins historic European Champs silver medal

University of Bath Sports Technology graduate Sam Weale is celebrating winning the silver medal at the Modern Pentathlon European Championships in Hungary.

Sam Weale in action at the 2008 World ChampionshipsThe 28-year-old Beijing 2008 Olympian produced a terrific run/shoot to climb from seventh place to second at the championships in Debrecen.

Weale (pictured) becomes the first British man to win an individual medal at a Modern Pentathlon European Championships. Team-mate Nick Woodbridge finished 26th.

Weale’s success means Britain have accumulated two medals at the championships so far, following the British women’s trio of Heather Fell, Katy Livingston and Mhairi Spence, who won bronze in the women’s team event at the championships yesterday (Saturday).

In the women’s individual competition Fell finished sixth, Spence was eighth, Louise Helyer 15th and Livingston 20th.

Helyer, Spence and Livingston are all University of Bath Coach Education and Sports Development graduates.

Weale, who is ranked 25th in the world and finished 10th at the Beijing Olympics, said: “It felt pretty good to cross the line in second today. I felt a foot taller and there was a real spring in my step when I crossed the line.

“I felt good and quite strong after the semi-final on Friday, but my combined event hadn’t gone so well, so I was a little nervous today.

“But I thought the final would be a good opportunity to put it right. I thought I was in with a chance after the fencing, but I was a little annoyed with the ride today because I had two fences down.

“Going into the combined event I thought potentially I was in the running for a medal. I felt quite confident, but it was a bit of surprise and a relief. It’s my first European or World Championship medal, hopefully there will be many more medals to come,” said Weale.

Gabb beats Davis Cup player Evans

Gabb beats Davis Cup player Evans

TeamBath Tennis Academy player Richard Gabb has created an upset by beating the top seed  in the opening round of the AEGON Pro-Series tournament at Frinton in Essex yesterday (Wednesday).

Eighteen-year-old Gabb knocked British number six and Davis Cup player Dan Evans out of the tournament by beating him 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round of the main draw.

Gabb, who is 10th ranked British junior, faces another Brit, world ranked 648 player Sean Thornley today (Thursday) in the second round. Victory would give the TeamBath Tennis Academy player a place in the quarter-finals of a senior tournament for the first time in his career.

Gabb’s victory over Evans is all the more impressive as he was playing with his old Wilson tennis rackets after his new Wilson rackets were stolen while in Essex.

Two weeks ago Gabb reached the quarter-finals of the boys’ doubles at Junior Wimbledon.

Hazarika wins his first ITF title

Hazarika wins his first ITF title

TeamBath Tennis Academy player Sid Hazarika is celebrating the biggest win of his career to date at the Under-18 AEGON Junior International Tournament in Edinburgh.

The 16-year-old was seeded four for the boys’ singles and beat Germany’s Thomas Weigel in three sets in the final.

Hazarika edged the first set 6-4 before the German levelled up by winning a second set tie break.

But Hazarika held his nerve to take his first International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament title 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4

“I played really well,” said Hazarika afterwards.  “It was a really tough match as Thomas was really mentally strong and he kept fighting for everything.

“I was a set and 4-1 up before he came back to level the match at one set all, but I was happy with the way I came through.”

“This title means a lot to me,” he added. “ I haven’t done this well in a long time so it could be a good break for me.”

The England women’s rugby team stepped up their preparations for the forthcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup with a training camp at the University of Bath.

“They’ve had a six-week strength and conditioning programme, but some of the squad haven’t played rugby since March, so it was about blowing away the cobwebs and making sure they’re sharp. We’ll be building-up the intensity leading into the World Cup.

“The facilities and the pitches here have been great,” she added. “The accommodation was absolutely great, just what we needed.”

“We’re optimistic about our chances. We’re really pleased about the preparation programme we have put in place.

10-strong British pentathlon team prepares for European Champs

Pentathlon GB has announced a 10-strong British team to compete at the 2010 modern pentathlon European Championships in Hungary.

Four senior athletes – Heather Fell, Mhairi Spence, Katy Livingston and Louise Helyer - have been selected to compete in the women’s individual competition.

Samantha Murray, Katy Burke and Freyja Prentice, who are all still juniors, will represent Great Britain in the team relay.

All seven are currently in the top-32 in the world rankings.

Beijing 2008 Olympians Sam Weale and Nick Woodbridge will contest the men’s individual competition and will be joined for the team relay by 19-year-old Jamie Cooke.

The 10-strong team are all based at the Pentathlon GB high performance centre at the University of Bath.

The European Championships run from 14-20 July and take place in Debrecen.

Meanwhile, Kate French, a Sports Performance student at the University, demonstrated the strength and depth of British women’s modern pentathlon when she finished second at the German Open Championships in Berlin at the weekend.

The 19-year-old was only beaten by Germany’s Eva Trautmann. French’s performance pushed her up to 55th in the world rankings. Team-mate Lydia Rosling finished 10th.

Cooke was the highest place British finisher in the men’s competition, coming seventh, with Daniel Worrall eighth, James Myatt 14th and Robert Flack 17th.

Richard Gabb through to second round at Wimbledon as Toby Martin secures first ATP ranking

Richard Gabb through to second round at Wimbledon as Toby Martin secures first ATP ranking

TeamBath Tennis Academy player Richard Gabb and former TeamBath player Ashley Hewitt swept aside their opponents in the opening round of their boys’ doubles match at Junior Wimbledon this afternoon (Wednesday)

The unseeded pair beat New Zealand’s Sebastian Lavie and Argentina’s Renzo Olivo 6-3, 6-2 on court six to set up a second round tie against number two seeds Damir Dzumhur from Boznia & Herzegovina and Mate Pavic from Croatia.

Gabb, now 18, made his Junior Wimbledon debut last year, reaching the second round of the boys’ singles.

His success came hot on the heels of fellow TeamBath player Toby Martin achieving his first ATP senior ranking points playing at the AEGON Pro-Series Futures event in Manchester.

The 17-year-old came through qualifying to reach the main draw and then produced a battling performance to beat Switzerland’s Joss Espasandin. After losing the first set 6-2 he won the second 6-1 and then saved six match points to come back from 6-3 down and win the final set tie-break.

That set up a second round contest against British Davies Cup player Jamie Baker, number one seed for the tournament, which Baker won in a second round tie-break

Martin becomes the fifth TeamBath player to gain an ATP world ranking while at the TeamBath Tennis Academy, which is an LTA International High Performance Centre. He follows Gabb, Hewitt, James Chaudry and Olivia Smith.

Barry Scollo, director of tennis at the TeamBath Tennis Academy, said: “Congratulation to Richard and to Toby for their achievements. They have worked extremely hard to improve their tennis. I’d also like to thank the Ian MacDonald and Alex Cockram, members of the coaching team at the University of Bath who have put so much work in with our players.

“The TeamBath Tennis Academy has also benefitted from the expertise of the Dave Sammel and Jim Edgar of the MCTA group in helping our players to progress.”

Hurdler gets GB off to flying start

University of Bath-based hurdler Dai Greene got Great Britain off to a flying start at the SPAR European Team Championships in Norway at the weekend.

The 24-year-old Welshman, who is coached by Malcolm Arnold at the Sports Training Village, secured Britain’s first win of the championships by taking the 400m hurdles in 49.53 seconds on Saturday.

“I knew I was the best in the field and that I could win,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting a fast time, just 12 points. It was nice to get the victory for the team.

“All of my rivals for Barcelona were in that race so it’s good and gives me confidence going into the Europeans,” he added.

University of Bath Sport and Exercise Science graduate Craig Pickering, also is coached in Bath by Arnold, ran the second leg for the GB 4×100m quartet that finished second to Italy.

University of Bath Sports Performance graduate Katharine Endacott ran the final leg for the women’s 4×100m relay team that finished fourth.

Great Britain finished second to Russia in the final overall standings.

Freyja 12th on World Cup Final debut

Young Briton Freyja Prentice finished 12th in her first World Cup Final in Moscow on Saturday (19 June).

All three were making their World Cup Final debuts.

In the men’s competition, Nick Woodbridge came 14th - the highest finish by a British man at a World Cup Final for five years. Team-mate Sam Weale came 25th.

All five athletes train at the Pentathlon GB high performance centre at the University of Bath.

Qualification for the World Cup Final is based on performances in World Cup Series events throughout the season.

MBE for Amy Williams in Queen’s Birthday Honours

Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games gold medallist Amy Williams said she is thrilled to be made an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Amy struck gold in the skeleton at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.  She became Britain’s first individual gold medallist at an Olympic Winter Games for 30 years and the first British woman individual gold medallist for 58 years.

The 27-year-old University of Bath graduate, who trains at the University, said: “This is a huge honour and a privilege. I’m so proud. I was absolutely stunned and completely blown away when I heard.

“This really caps what has been an amazing few months since I returned from Vancouver. I’m really excited about going to Buckingham Palace. I can’t wait.”

Professor Glynis Breakwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, congratulated Amy. She said: “Congratulations to Amy from everyone at the University of Bath. She has been a terrific ambassador both for Great Britain and for the University of Bath.

“Seeing Amy bringing home gold from Vancouver was absolutely brilliant and this is a fitting testament to her achievements. I’m delighted for her.”

TeamBath netballer and University of Bath graduate Pamela Cookey will be England’s vice-captain for the tour to Australia.

The England team fly out to Australia for the tour today (Friday). The tour is part of England’s build-up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October.

Cookey, who is a University Business Administration graduate and was named Superleague player of the year this season for the third successive season, said: “Getting to represent your country is a huge honour but to be given the added opportunity to support our captain and help lead the team is amazing and I can’t wait to get out there.”

Cookey captained TeamBath to their fourth Superleague title this season out of five Superleague campaigns.

British trio to make World Cup Final debuts in Moscow

British trio to make World Cup Final debuts in Moscow

Three young British athletes will make their modern pentathlon World Cup Final debuts later this month (19-20 June).

Freyja Prentice, Samantha Murray and Katy Burke feature in a five-strong British team for the competition in Moscow.  They will be joined by Sam Weale and Nick Woodbridge, who contest the men’s event.

Prentice, Murray and Burke had to hold off a strong challenge from some of Britain”s more experienced pentathletes, including Beijing 2008 Olympians Heather Fell and Katy Livingston, to secure places to compete in Moscow.

To qualify for the World Cup Final athletes must finish in the top-36 in the five-event World Cup Series, but some extra places are then available because only the top three athletes from each nation can compete.

Such is the depth of the women’s sport in Great Britain that seven British pentathletes featured in the top-36 in the 2010 World Cup Series.

Freyja Prentice, who has just turned 20, was the highest ranked Brit in sixth. Originally from Inverurie near Aberdeen, she now lives in Bath, where she is studying Biology at the University of Bath and trains at the Pentathlon GB high performance centre

She is joined in Moscow by Samantha Murray, who is also 20 and ranked ninth in the 2010 World Cup Series. From Clitheroe in Lancashire, she is studying French and Politics at the University of Bath.

Katy Burke, who has just turned 21 and was ranked at 13 in the 2010 World Cup Series, is originally from Cleveleys in Lancashire and has just completed a Sports Performance degree at the University of Bath. Like Prentice and Murray, she trains at the Pentathlon GB high performance centre.

But Heather Fell (ranked 17th), Mhairi Spence (18th), Katy Livingston (25th) and Louise Helyer (32nd) miss out.

Sam Weale qualified for the World Cup Final in 20th place in the men’s rankings, with Nick Woodbridge ended the series in 40th, but because some nations ahead of him had qualified more than the maximum three athletes, he gets the opportunity to compete.

Jan Bartu, Pentathlon GB Performance Director, said: “The boys have both done a World Cup Final before, so they know what to expect. We are looking for improved performances from both of them.

“It’s going to be an intensive and challenging experience for the girls,” he added.

“It’s particularly important for the whole team to have opportunities to do the combined event under pressure at this level,” he added.

The women’s event takes place on Saturday 19 June with the men going on Sunday 20 June.
